Two Field-Tested Planting Recipes (per 3m × 1.5m Bed)

When planning a border revision, aim for a ratio of roughly 30% structural evergreen or woody framework, 50% seasonal matrix perennials and grasses, and 20% bulbs and ephemeral fillers. Below are two reliable combinations using RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) taxa that perform in compact urban plots without staking.

Layer Role Recipe A: Baked South / West Wall Recipe B: Cool North / East Shelter Spacing & Annual Task
Upper / Vertical (1.8m–3.5m) 1 × Trachelospermum jasminoides (on wire) or 1 × multi-stem Punica granatum 'Nana' 1 × Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris or 1 × Amelanchier lamarckii Tie in new leader shoots each June; remove crossing twigs in February.
Evergreen Anchor (60cm–1m) 3 × Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Golf Ball' or 2 × Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii 3 × Sarcococca confusa (sweet box) + 3 × Polystichum setiferum (soft shield fern) Space 75cm apart; clip Pittosporum lightly in May; cut spent Euphorbia stems to base.
Seasonal Mid-Tier (40cm–75cm) 5 × Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' + 5 × Calamagrostis brachytricha 5 × Astrantia major 'Roma' + 5 × Hakonechloa macra Space 40cm apart; comb out dead grass foliage in late February before new shoots rise.
Living Mulch Groundcover (15cm–30cm) 7 × Erigeron karvinskianus + 5 × Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet' 7 × Epimedium × rubrum + 5 × Geranium macrorrhizum 'Ingwersen's Variety' Space 30cm apart along bed edge; shear old Epimedium leaves in late winter to show flowers.

Vertical Gardens: Honest Trade-Offs Between Pockets and Ground Slots

Vertical green walls dominate social media makeover feeds, yet modular plastic or felt wall pockets are the single highest-failure feature in domestic gardens. A 2-litre felt pocket mounted on a sunny brick wall holds barely enough moisture to survive one breezy July afternoon. If a timer battery dies while you are away for a weekend, the entire wall crisps.

For durable vertical greening without daily anxiety, choose one of two grounded systems:

  1. Tensioned 3mm Stainless Steel Wire Grids: Drill M8 masonry eye bolts into mortar joints (never the soft face of old frost-susceptible bricks) at 40cm vertical intervals. Plant climbers in the ground at least 30cm forward of the wall base to avoid the dry rain-shadow overhang.
  2. Deep Trough Staging (Minimum 45cm Depth): If the yard is 100% paved over basement vaults or concrete slabs, build tiered cedar troughs holding at least 120 litres of John Innes No. 3 soil-based compost mixed with 20% coarse grit. Soil-based compost retains moisture and nutrients years longer than peat-free coir multipurpose bags, which slump by a third after twelve months.
